Discovering the Soul of Costa Rica: The Boruca Community and Their Legendary Masks

Imagine drifting along Costa Rica’s stunning coastline, the sun dipping low in the sky as you approach a hidden paradise that few travelers ever get to see. Aboard the Kontiki Wayra, our luxurious boutique yacht, you’re not just a tourist skimming the surface—you’re an explorer, diving into the heart of Costa Rica's cultural soul. And on this journey, one of the most unforgettable experiences awaits: meeting the Boruca community, guardians of an ancient and vibrant culture that pulses with stories, art, and resilience.

As we sail into the southern Pacific waters, whispers of tradition, history, and spirit come to life. The Boruca community, also known as the Brunca, lives nestled in the mountains and forests near Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. Known for their artistry, they are distinguished by their elaborate, hand-carved masks and vibrant ceremonies. They speak Brunka, their indigenous language, and have kept their heritage alive despite centuries of change. Their art tells stories of their ancestors and the natural world that has sustained them.

Our journey aboard the Kontiki Wayra is designed to go beyond simple tourism. This isn’t just a visit—it’s an invitation into the Boruca way of life. As we approach, you may feel the anticipation in the air. The Boruca artisans will be joining us on the yacht, bringing along the stories and symbols that make their community unique. They step onboard with carved wooden masks—each one a kaleidoscope of colors, animals, and ancestral faces, intricately painted with details that seem almost alive.

One of the artisans stands ready to share the history behind his work. Holding a mask of a jaguar—a powerful animal spirit in Boruca mythology—he begins to explain its significance. Jaguars, he says, represent protection and strength, guardians of the forests the Boruca people call home. Each mask embodies the natural world they revere: fierce jaguars, colorful birds, and swirling river patterns that flow through their art as a tribute to the life-giving elements surrounding them.

And then, with a smile, the artisan hands you a carving tool. Under his guidance, you get to feel the wood beneath your fingers, chisel and paintbrush in hand, experiencing the patience and artistry that go into each piece. The Boruca don't just make masks—they pass down memories, carve out legacies, and paint a vibrant connection to their history.

As the day unfolds, the artisans share more than just their craft. They tell tales of the "Juego de los Diablitos" (Game of the Little Devils), an annual ceremony where the Boruca people dress in masks and costumes, reenacting the Spanish conquest. In this tradition, the "diablitos," or little devils, represent the indigenous resistance, while the Spanish conquerors are symbolized by a bull.

Through dance, music, and storytelling, the Boruca bring history to life, keeping the memory of their ancestors' resilience alive for new generations.

Lunch is served on board as the conversation flows, and soon, laughter fills the air. You realize that this isn’t just a cultural demonstration—it’s a rare connection, a blending of lives and experiences. You’re not just learning about the Boruca; you’re sharing a moment with them, feeling the pulse of Costa Rica’s indigenous spirit through every story and symbol.

The Kontiki Wayra isn’t simply a vessel for luxurious travel. It’s a bridge that connects travelers to the hidden gems of Costa Rica, a portal to cultures and communities that too often go unseen. Our Pura Vida Expedition strives to make a positive impact, creating opportunities for communities like the Boruca to share their heritage on their own terms, empowering them to thrive while preserving their traditions.

As we sail onward, you feel a renewed sense of awe for Costa Rica—a place not just rich in natural beauty, but in the living, breathing heritage of its people. Leaving the Boruca behind, you take with you more than just memories of a scenic journey. You carry the spirit of a culture, the rhythm of an ancient dialect, and the stories that the Boruca artisans so generously shared.
